Northwest Kansas Housing has $125,000 for rental assistance and security deposits

Northwest Kansas tenants have new opportunities for rental assistance as well as security deposit assistance. Northwest Kansas Housing, Inc. received a new grant that provides funding for these much needed programs.

Source of Grant Funding

Kansas Housing Resources Corporation announced the grant award to Northwest Kansas Housing. The state agency is administering funds to the agency plus other agencies across the state who also were awarded funding.

The funds were made available through the HOME Investment Partnerships Program. This federal program provides state and regional agencies with funding that can be used to offset the difficult economic conditions in their local service areas. Each agency may distribute funding to local organizations that assist in more direct local footprints.

Rental Assistance

Rental assistance to Northwest Kansas families is made available as a part of the Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) program. This program often provides rental subsidies as well as direct rent payments to landlords.

Northwest Kansas Housing has chosen to focus on emergency housing support, meaning that they prefer to help families in crisis with late rent payments rather than to provide ongoing support to families who are chronically unable to afford their rent. This means that you could get help with your rent payments on a temporary basis if you are at risk of an eviction or even homelessness.

Security Deposit Assistance

Some of the funding is also to be used for helping you get out of an unsustainable situation. If your rent is unaffordable, then perhaps you would be better off moving into a cheaper apartment or rental home. While this might be your goal, you may lack the savings in order to make a first month’s rent payment and security deposit all at the same time.

This is where the security deposit assistance can help. If you can come up with your rent payment, then Northwest Kansas Housing may be able to help with your security deposit. This can help you provide all of the funding you need to move in.

There are income qualifications and other eligibility requirements in place to ensure that only those who need the help and can most benefit will receive priority. To speak with an agency representative who can help you determine initial eligibility, call Northwest Kansas Housing at 785-217-2023.
