GCCAC emergency rental assistance funds provided to Greater Oakland residents

Garrett County Community Action Corp. (GCCAC), Inc. is a private non-profit organization constituted under Sec. 501(c)(3) of the IRS code and operational since 1965 in Garrett County, Maryland.  It partners in building a self reliant and strong community through its various projects especially meant for low income groups. It also owns several housing and community facilities in different parts of Garrett County.

GCCAC works among individuals, families and aged people through a range of services. Funding for such welfare projects comes from federal sources (55%), State of Maryland (another 15%), private investments and contributions account for 15%,  5% from local government income and the remainder 10% from earned income. It is governed by a 15-member board of directors selected by the community and the local interests. Corporate office of the GCCAC is at 104 East Enter Street in Oakland, Maryland.

The gamut of activities majorly under taken by GCCAC includes Education / Life Long Learning, Health Nutrition Services, Rental Services, Homeowner Services, Transportation, Emergency Services and Community Building.  Under the every head GCCAC attains the following.

  • Education / Life Long Learning: It works on two areas – Child Development and Asset (Adult) Development. Child Development comprises Head Start, Wrap Around and After School programs. GCCAC assists in Asset Development in the areas like housing, budgeting and counseling, savings accounts (IDAs) and cars.,
  • Health Nutrition Services: It entails a clutch of services that encompass everyday life right from Home-delivery Meals to Senior Health Insurance.
  • Rental Services: It precisely renders services like rental assistance, temporary housing, emergency assistance, commercial properties and tenant advocacy.
  • Homeowner Services: It supervises and guides on rehab home, first time home owner, weatherization, energy assistance, group work camp, furnace repair and mortgage / foreclosure.
  • Transportation: Transport mechanism hinges on 02 concpts – Garrett Transportation Service (GTS) and Wheels to Work. GTS is a public transport service whereas Wheels to Work is meant for owning and maintaining a vehicle by the low income group for home to office and back.
  • Emergency Services: It consists of food assistance, temporary shelter, homeless services and utility termination assistance.
  • Community Building: The profile of work under this head comprises housing development, community facilities, small business loans, and municipal assistance,
