Eviction notices countered by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami was originally founded during the Great Depression. Currently, Catholic Charities has an annual budget of over $20 million! They help roughly 10,000 people annually. At the time of its inception, Catholic Charities was relatively small and focused on juvenile delinquencies, helping immigrants, and out of wedlock pregnancies. Over the years, it has expanded its services, and now they offer services and coordinate with other local agencies to deliver the most help as possible in the most efficient manner.

Catholic Charities offers multiple housing and shelter services to the homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless. They have multiple shelters under the new life shelter program. The shelters under this program house up to 15 families and offer counseling services. They are intended to help people get back on their feet after losing their homes. Also, the staff at the shelter encourages continued development and growth of children while they are at the shelter. This is done through art therapy, tutoring, counseling, and field trips. The new life shelter also provides homelessness prevention assistance. This takes the form of financial assistance to those suffering from unemployment or underemployment. The financial assistance can be applied utility payments for those with shut off notices, rent and mortgage payment for those with eviction notices, and food. If the Catholic Charities cannot meet the needs of those applying for help, they will refer those applicants to the best organization to meet their specific needs.

Catholic Charities also offers a large amount of emergency assistance. One of their bigger initiatives is directed at Haitians evacuated by the United States. Upon arrival to the United States, Haitian evacuees are given host families. Up to 1000 of those evacuees and their host families are given emergency cash assistance and food and clothing vouchers. Catholic Charities also collaborates with Mercy Hospital and FIU to ensure adequate health care for evacuees and allowing evacuees to take or continue collegiate education if they so choose. Also, Catholic Charities provides food, housing, and clothing to a certain number of Haitian families that have been evacuated for over a year. For those the Catholic Charities are unable to help, Catholic Charities will refer those in need to the best organization to meet their needs.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami has become one of the largest organizations in Miami and provides incredible help to many in need. For more information about donating, volunteering, or receiving assistance, they can be reached by telephone at 305-573-3333.
