Allegany County HRDC provides transitional housing and permanent solutions

Human Resources Development Commission of Allegany County, popularly referred to as HRDC, is an organization that is dedicated to improve the society is any way it can. It is privately owned, not for profit organization that is located in Cumberland, Maryland. This organization provides three different types of social services, each of them quite distinct from each other. The services provided include programs in the categories of Children & Family, Housing & Community and Senior Citizen Welfare.

Under the program for Children & Family, the variety of services provided include imparting education and providing family consultation services to the parents of the child. Education is made available by teachers who have the necessary credentials. Family counseling sessions are held so that parents can learn the methods of parenthood and how that can affect their child’s welfare. At HRDC, the program also includes providing meals and snacks as well.

Another program that is managed by HRDC is providing housing related assistance to folks who are having trouble finding shelter. The agency actually maintains a housing shelter that is fully equipped with fourteen beds, for women – especially with children – who are homeless. The idea behind these transition facilities is to allow those who are looking for a permanent shelter to use these homes as a temporary place where they are accommodated until something more permanent can be arranged.

Under the same program, HRDC allows folks who are currently devoid of any housing facilities to find reliable housing at affordable rates. Assistance is also provided on providing training on a variety of life related activities like tax planning, increasing one’s employment skills, learning how to use computers and internet for everyday life.

The last aspect of HRDC that requires special mention is the efforts towards helping senior citizens lead a happy life. The cruxes of the senior citizen program are the four different senior centers that are setup across the county. These centers offer meals to senior citizens. It is not just about the food though, as these centers also design and cultivate activities. These activities are designed to involve as many senior citizens as possible, giving them an opportunity to meet and greet others who are just like them.

The folks at HRDC would like nothing better than to make the local society a better place to live. They can be contacted at their address which is 125 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, MD 21502. The contact number for them is 301-777-5970.
