Dear Ruben,

We did a feature several months ago about getting help with back rent in Yuma. In that story we focused largely on the local housing agency (HACY) and some of the reduced rent alternatives that you may have to your current rental situation.

We also provided a pretty good look at a larger organization that provides substantial assistance for lower income individuals and families that need help with their current and back rent payments.

WACOG

The Western Arizona Council of Governments (WACOG) is one of the leading providers of emergency rental assistance in western Arizona. WACOG is part of the greater Community Action Partnership, and it is the dedicated service provider for emergency financial assistance and rent help in Yuma County, as well as La Paz County and Mohave County.

The Yuma office is located at 221 S. 3rd Ave. You can reach them at 928-782-1886.

A case manager will work with you to determine what your needs are and to help find an appropriate solution. Part of this process is to help you restore your employment so that you will have income to pay rent. They may be able to provide some rental assistance funding to help you stay in your current location if you are about to start a new job.

If it is not feasible for you to remain in your current home, then WACOG can help you find transitional housing while you focus on your job search. You can even be matched with job training programs to build on your current skills so that you have a better chance to earn income.

Be upfront about your challenges with your case manager. They will help you identify ways that you can improve your situation. They use cash when they need to so that your basic needs are met, but they also have tremendous referrals and advice that they can provide to help you reach your goals. They will not help you with paying rent for only this month. They want to help you be able to pay rent every month.

We periodically review different agencies and charities that provide low-cost or zero-interest rental loans, as well as grants that do not have to be repaid. Visit us often for other stories about Arizona rental assistance programs. I really hope you are able to get help paying rent in Yuma from one of the trusted community partners that we have featured in a story. Please let us know if you have any additional information to share.
