I have fallen two months behind on rent in Wilson County, TX

(Request from Jennifer in Floresville, Texas) I live in government housing with my husband and four children. My husband had lost his job and i have been the only one working. I have fallen two months behind on rent and have one week to get my belongings and vacate the apartment but have nowhere to go. Please can someone help me?

Dear Jennifer,

You do not have much time given your expected eviction date. Therefore it is urgent that you take action immediately so that you can line up an appropriate solution before you have to leave.

Housing Authorities of Wilson County

Given the fact that you are already benefiting from subsidized rent by living in government housing, it is unlikely that you are going to be able to find a more affordable long-term solution outside of where you currently live. For this reason I strongly recommend talking with your social worker at the Housing Authorities of Wilson County. You can reach the office on Standish Street by calling 830-393-6560.

There will be limitations on what they are able to do for you what still they want to help you succeed and will match you up with the available opportunities to help you stay if it is possible. If it is not possible for you to stay, and they may be able to match you up with transitional housing through partner organization while your husband looks for another job.

CCSCT

Another organization that may be able to help is the Community Council of South Central Texas, or CCSCT. This organization is provided community service options since 1965 so it is definitely an ally to consider.

In certain situations the organization may be able to line up rental assistance in order to help you avoid becoming evicted from your current apartment. You likely meet the hardship requirement, but they will also want to see that it is feasible for you to be able remain in your current rental unit if they decide to help pay your arrears.

You may give CCSCT a call at 830-303-4376. While it is certainly reasonable to ask questions during your call, it is recommended that you schedule an appointment to meet with the caseworker so that you can find an immediate solution to your temporary income woes.

One option may be emergency housing. Transitional housing could provide a longer-term solution. Ultimately though you will need to find a permanent housing solution that will be affordable for your household.

Keep in mind that the primary problem here is not your rent but your income. Rent in Wilson County, TX is not particularly high compared with other residential communities. Therefore job skills training and other assistance related to helping your husband find a job may be the most important need once you have secured stable and safe housing.
