CCSCT cuts rental rates for lower income Texas families

The Community Council of South Central Texas, Inc. (CCSCT) can permanently cut your rental rates or help with late payments if you qualify for help.

CCSCT serves multiple rural counties in south central Texas. It is responsible for dealing with emergency housing situations as well as providing longer term solutions for households who continuously struggle to afford regular rent payments.

Process for Approval

Your household must be classified as a low income household. This means that you can earn only slight above the poverty rate (125% of federal poverty level) and still qualify.

You will have to provide proof of income and identification for all household members, including their social security cards. A copy of your lease and utility statements may also be necessary to prove that you are a local resident.

Upon calling CCSCT at 830-303-4376, you may schedule a face-to-face appointment with a case manager at one of their locations closest to you. Each consultation averages 90 minutes, so you need to allow enough time for your case manager to evaluate your needs and review all of the documentation that you bring with you.

What is nice is that unlike other organizations, you could actually get an answer and immediate benefits at the end of your initial consultation. You don’t have to wait weeks for approval from some other board. This can be especially helpful if you are on the verge of an eviction from your current rental home.

Available Rental Assistance

Depending on the program for which you qualify, you could receive half of your rent payment as a grant that does not have to be repaid. This can help if you are trying to scrape together enough money to meet your total rent requirement.

Special consideration is made to elderly applicants as well as those who are totally and permanently disabled. Otherwise, your employment status or commitment to education may help you qualify. If you are not working or going to school, it may be more difficult to meet your funding request.

If you do qualify for long-term rental assistance, you may be able to utilize a voucher that is good for a portion of your rent. This can bring your rent payments in line with what is acceptable based on your total household income.

CCSCT has served this community since 1965. See what they can do to help your family afford rent without taking out loans.
