Volunteers of America-Western Nebraska helps pay rent for eviction prevention

Volunteers of America-Western Nebraska is a nonprofit agency based in Lewellen, Nebraska. This agency provides funding for rental and utility assistance whenever it receives funding.

Even though Garden County has a small population, it has better support than many counties with much higher numbers of residents. This is thanks to Volunteers of America-Western Nebraska which provides a rental assistance program to help financially distressed tenants in Lewellen and surrounding communities.

Funding for this program comes from two sources:

  • Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska
  • United Methodist Church of Oshkosh

When funds exist, you may be provided with a one-time grant to help pay your rent if it will allow you to avoid becoming evicted from your current residence. This grant can be utilized to cover back rent and bring your payments back up to current status. Unlike a loan, you do not have to repay these funds. Additional funds may also be provided to cover utility payments if you have received a disconnection notice.

There are of course certain eligibility requirements that must be met. You cannot have previously received rental assistance funds from this agency.

Your household will need to be classified as a lower income household. Higher income families are expected to be able to find a solution based on their additional cash available, including moving into a cheaper rental property if needed. Lower income families often are already living in a lower rent dwelling, which can make a move unlikely to improve the situation. A lack of funds for security deposits can also make a move nearly impossible.
