S.E.R.V.E. financial assistance pays up to $100 to Greater Stafford families

Local families who have struggled to get through a recent financial crisis are finding that one organization helps with actual cash payments. S.E.R.V.E. provides these payments to help those who cannot pay their rent as well as other living expenses.

Obviously no one has a rent payment as low as $100. The aid is not designed to cover a full month’s rent. Instead, it is meant to supplement what a family has on hand to help them make a full rent payment.

These payments of up to $100 per family are made as a part of the Emergency Financial Assistance program that covers families living in Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties as well as in Fredericksburg. Families who have established residency in the area may apply for this aid when they experience a life-changing event that threatens their financial well-being.

Applicants may receive up to $100 in cash to cover emergency rental expenses. Anyone who has not received a payment in the past year may reapply for another grant from the organization.

Who is S.E.R.V.E.?

S.E.R.V.E. is a nonprofit charity that provides rental assistance and food aid to lower-income families in its multi-county service area. With aid packages consisting of a cash payment and grocery items from its food pantry, clients receive comprehensive support to help them get through their emergency situation. Prescription support is also provided thanks to a grant from Mary Washington Hospital.

Those who receive the cash rent payment are encouraged to also take advantage of the classes that teach budgeting skills. Other workshops build computer skills to help them find a new job.

Distressed tenants may contact S.E.R.V.E. at 540-288-8223 to schedule an appointment. Due to increased demand, clients requesting cash aid will be booked for appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

If a family has already received a $100 payment and needs additional support from the food pantry, they may call 540-288-9603. Food pantry donations are doled out monthly to families in need.

Agency directors are aware that some families may need much more than the $100 payment, especially when rent is more than one month delinquent. Staff may provide a referral in some situations to one of the other local aid programs that can offer supplemental support.
