Rental aid helps local tenants in Scott County, Missouri

Scott County residents who are unable to pay the rent have a couple of allies in their fight to avoid homelessness. Some programs provide the last defense against forced evictions, while one provides a permanent subsidy.

DAEOC

Delta Area Economic Opportunity Corporation fights homelessness using a couple of tools. First, DAEOC maintains an emergency homeless shelter in Sikeston. Anyone who has been evicted from their home may stay at the shelter rent free while they get their affairs in order.

Beyond the shelter, DAEOC operates a transitional housing program that helps Scott County residents regain their independence. This program helps them save money and plan for a move to permanent housing. The agency also administers properties that participants may move into permanently. For consideration, call the Anderson Street Outreach Office at 573-471-4114.

FSD

The Family Support Division of Missouri’s social services agency can step in when tenants are facing rent emergencies. Those who are facing housing problems may set up an appointment with a social worker by calling 855-373-4636. While many clients believe they do not qualify for benefits, many screening sessions result in new benefits being extended.

Loan Options

Rental emergencies can be handled by a number of methods, but grant-based aid like the benefits paid through the first two agencies is preferred to rental loans. Some clients find that they earn too much money to be approved for benefits or cash aid.

There are nonprofit lenders that can help a tenant deal with a temporary setback without putting them in too much of a financial squeeze. These credit unions lend money at rates that are generally less than area banks.

  • St. Augustine Credit Union is a very small credit union located in Kelso. Call 573-264-3030 for membership and loan information.
  • Division 10 Highway Employees Credit Union offers loans to pay rent, with rates dependent on credit scores. This credit union has a restricted membership policy though, so an applicant must have some relation to MODOT or MSHP. Call 573-472-5373 for the Sikeston branch.
  • Cape Regional Credit Union has an office located just north of the Scott County line. Scott County residents that work in Cape Girardeau County may still be eligible for membership. Call 573-334-7686.
