HRDC rental assistance serves Billings and surrounding counties

The District 7 Human Resources Development Council (HRDC) is the leading human services nonprofit organization serving Montana residents. HRDC rental assistance and community service programs are directed towards individuals and families living in Big Horn, Carbon, Stillwater, Sweet Grass and Yellowstone counties.

Emergency Solutions Grant

HRDC has provided emergency solutions grants through their homeless prevention and Rapid Re-Housing programs. The grants have been used to help those who have become homeless get the funds they need to quickly move into permanent housing. The money could be used towards first month’s rent as well as security deposits.

Due to funding constraints, emergency solutions grants may not always be available. Call 406-247-4700 to see if funding exists and if you may qualify for a grant. If funding is not available HRDC they refer you to Family Services, Salvation Army or St. Vincent de Paul.

General Assistance

If you do not have income and are waiting for benefits through SSI or SSDI then HRDC may be able to provide some relief through the General Assistance program. You’ll need to show that you’ve already apply for benefits but that you are still waiting for approval.

Funds are intended to help you pay your rent payments so that you can remain in your own and cover basic household expenses. General Assistance is a grant that you do not need to repay if you are denied benefits through your SSI or SSDI applications. If you are approved for benefits than the funds would be repaid by the Social Security Administration on your behalf assuming that you receive backpay.

Transitional Housing for Single Mothers

HRDC administers Harmony House to serve single mothers and their children while they are seeking a permanent place to live. If you qualify you could remain in the home for up to a year and a half.

Residents have the chance to complete educational goals including GED while living in the facility. Case management and classes are also provided to residents to help them become self-sufficient. Call 406-247-4732 to inquire about Harmony House as well as to find out about any vacancies.

Housing Choice Vouchers

Tenants who need subsidized rent could benefit from the Rural Section 8 Housing program. This program can pay a portion of your rent to your landlord every month if you are unable to afford your rent on your own. It is available throughout the HRDC service area with the exception of rental properties within the Billings city limits.

If your household income is below 50% of the area median income for your county then you may be able to cap your monthly rent payments at no greater than 40% of your income. An application is required and there is generally a lengthy wait list. Call 406-247-4732 for more information.

HRDC is not a lender and it does not provide loans for rent. Instead this nonprofit organization provides grant funding to individuals and families who qualify based on their limited income or financial hardship. This organization can be a great first stop if you need help paying your rent. For households with higher income levels, you may be directed to other alternatives including rental loans through mainstream financial institutions.
