Genesis Home provides 12 months of transitional housing for Durham residents

The Genesis Home in Durham NC provides supportive services and housing to foster independence and end homelessness for families with children. Established in 1980 by members of the DCIA (Durham Congregations in Action), Genesis Home is a non-profit mission that provides three distinct types of support programs to help families become self sufficient and contributing members of their community. These three programs are Family Matters, Turning Point and Circles of Support.

Family Matters is the first program introduced by Genesis Home, and was established in late February 1989. This program is designed to provide families with children with the care and support they need to foster independence. Established in September 2006, the Turning Point program is again geared towards families with children, but goes a step further by providing supportive services as well as rental assistance in permanent housing.

To be eligible for this type of housing, the head of the family must be diagnosed with a disability. Relatively similar to Durham’s 10 year Housing First initiatives, Genesis Home believes that in order for families to build self-sufficiency, they must first have stable housing. Circles of Support is a fairly unique program offered by the Genesis Home and matches formerly homeless individuals and families with support bodies such as civic organizations and congregations so that they can receive the necessary support for a period of 12 months.

Each member and resident of the Genesis Home receives individual attention, which makes it easier for them to achieve their desired results. Upon arrival at the home, residents are introduced to onsite support and case management staff, who provide services that help identify the root cause of the individuals or families obstacles and how to overcome them and causes of their homelessness. As a way of boosting a family’s income, residents are educated and enrolled in public assistance programs, education and employment opportunities and how to eradicate any debt that may be posing a hindrance in securing a housing loan.

Additionally, the case managers, partner agencies and volunteers at the Genesis Home provide counseling and training on issues such as anger management, encouraging family relationships, overcoming alcohol and drug addiction, parenting and budgeting and domestic violence and abuse.
