DSHA offers reduced cost housing in Kent & Sussex Counties

Is your rent too high? Many distressed renters seek rental assistance grants that are often unavailable due to a lack of funding. Instead, consider making a clean break when your lease expires and take advantage of one of these lower cost options through the Delaware State Housing Authority (DSHA).

If you are willing to enroll in the Moving to Work (MTW) program, you may apply for available apartments among the 518 units managed by DSHA. The MTW requirement is waived for disabled or elderly applicants.

If you do not wish to live in one of the 10 Public Housing Projects managed by DSHA, you could still benefit from a housing choice voucher through the Section 8 program. Over 900 vouchers are currently provided through the program, which pays a portion of the rent directly to landlords who accept the voucher.

DSHA also subsidizes apartment communities for low income households who cannot afford to pay market rents charged by landlords in Kent or Sussex Counties. For these units, the federal government pays a large portion of the rent so that you are only responsible for 30% of your adjusted gross income. This is especially beneficial for households where one or more adults do not earn enough to be able to pay average rent.

Call 888-363-8808 to request an application and be added to the waiting list.

You may want to talk more with a case manager at DSHA before you commit to one of the above options. They can help you evaluate your financial resources to determine eligibility for each program.

If you cannot afford to wait until your name is called from the waiting list, you may wish to contact one of the other agencies serving Delaware for rental assistance.
