Coosa & Tallapoosa Aid to People stops rent disasters

Tallapoosa Aid to People is a leading rental assistance program in central Alabama. This charitable organization provides services to poor families across Tallapoosa and Coosa counties.

Many of the families come to the agency in desperate need of immediate rental assistance. Not only have their utilities been disconnected but they have been served with an eviction notice. Without aid, they will likely become homeless which leads to many new problems.

By stepping in to help these folks during their darkest hour, Tallapoosa Aid to People (TAP) helps to control the situation and prevent matters from worsening. The directors are well aware that there are not very good options for a family who is evicted in these parts.

Those who are in danger of eviction due to arrears are encouraged to get help right away. Funds are limited, making it important to get approved during the current funding cycle. Also, delaying an already bad situation can allow problems to worsen. It gives case managers a chance to work towards a solution when they have enough time to intervene. Landlords are not interested in delaying eviction once they have already had to go to court.

To request emergency rent assistance, local residents should prepare for an interview. Documentation should show household income and family size. Aid workers will want to see evidence of any benefit payments.

Can TAP cover all of the arrears?

Many delinquent rent situations are too severe for TAP to fully fund. Doing so would deplete their resources too quickly. But there are other options.

Sometimes the Red Cross can also release funds to a household to put towards rent. This is especially true during times of an emergency or disaster. One applicant could potentially receive rental assistance funds from two agencies. TAP shares a building with the Red Cross, making this a natural referral relationship between aid organizations.

How can someone get rent help?

Applying for funding can start with a quick call to the Lake Martin Area United Way. Local residents may simply dial 211 to connect with a representative. If outside of the service area, calls may be directed to 256-234-3291.

Some referrals are also made through the Tallapoosa Christian Crisis Center. Calls may be directed to 256-329-3327.

For a direct connection with a TAP case manager, clients may call 256-234-3291. An appointment can be scheduled to evaluate all the needs of the household. After all, sometimes rent payments can be paired with utility credits for a complete aid package!
