Butler County has two rental assistance programs serving low income tenants

Butler County tenants are served by two community agencies that can provide limited help when you are unable to pay the rent.

David City Housing Authority

First off, the David City Housing Authority is dedicated to making rent affordable. The agency is primarily concerned with providing you with a low rent alternative to market rents.

The agency administers Sunshine Court, which is a reduced rent residential community created with Seniors in mind. Since many of our Seniors live on a fixed income and are unable to work, Sunshine Court is a welcome alternative to other rental properties. While Sunshine Court is an assisted living facility, it is still set up like an apartment community. Therefore, you may still maintain some independence while getting help with laundry or meals. Daily activities are also provided. If you are at least 60 years of age, there may be a possibility of moving into a new apartment for less rent than you currently are being charged. For more information, call the David City Housing Authority at 402-367-3587.

Blue Valley Community Action Partnership

For everyone else, Blue Valley Community Action Partnership (BVCA) may be able to help with your rental assistance needs. A Nebraska service provider since 1966, BVCA is dedicated to overcoming poverty and strengthening communities within Butler, Fillmore, Gage, Jefferson, Polk, Saline, Seward, Thayer and York counties. Some northern Kansas residents may also qualify for benefits.

Services have included 180+ reduced rent apartments located across 16 communities. Each is different, as some are for families with young children while others may be for elderly tenants.

Limited financial assistance is provided if you are experiencing a financial emergency and you need help with temporary housing. Small grants are provided while funding is available. Shelters are also provided if you need them. This benefit is available through BVCA’s Homeless Assistance program. You do not necessarily have to be homeless to receive benefits, but you should be able to show that you are in danger of being evicted if you want to qualify.

A special Lease-to-Own program allows you to pay rent during a probationary period and then convert the lease into a plan to purchase the home. BVCA can help with the financing once you have proven you can diligently make your payments on time. In some cases, financial assistance could give you the down payment you need on an eligible property that you would like to buy.
