After paying rent, I have only $100 left for groceries each month

(Request from Hazel in Lake Charles, Louisiana) I have a home I rent and all bills are paid. My problem is we have a shortage of food I have an 11 year old daughter.

My problem is not rent or bills. After paying that I only have $100 left for groceries for the month. All I need is a little bit of food for me and my 11-year old daughter. I also need help with son school uniforms and panties, socks, bras, and shoes. I haven’t had to ask for help in 10 years and this is very embarrassing for us. I am disabled and just can’t do it by myself anymore. I’m begging you to help my daughter not me. I will go without just so she can eat and go to school. Please help if it pleases GOD. WE COULD REALLY APPRECIATE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO. GOD BLESS YOU.

Dear Hazel,

We generally focus on rental assistance programs for our clients, but I want to make sure that I can direct you to the closest aid organizations that can help you with food and clothing since that appears to be your primary need. I want to provide you with a few to select from, since some provide more comprehensive support than others.

Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities of Southwest Louisiana is the local representative of Second Harvest Food Bank. This religious-based organization operates a food pantry at 612 Louisiana Avenue (just off the MLK) in Lake Charles.

You will find that while the food distribution program meets your immediate needs, there are also many other types of support that could be beneficial. Rent, food and emergency assistance are commonly provided. To find out when the next food distribution is scheduled, you may call them directly at 337-439-7436.

Christian World

Christian World is also affiliated with Second Harvest. I think this organization can help since they provide both food and personal care items. This could really be a big help. Call Christian World at 337-475-0157 to see how they can help out.

Beauregard Community Action Association

Rental aid is not the only offering of Beauregard Community Action. Emergency food can be provided for your family right away at this local human services organization. Call 337-463-7263.

I hope that these organizations are able to provide you with your non-rent related needs so that you can feed and clothe your family.
