HACAP brings reduced rent to Benton, Johnson, Linn & Washington Counties

One of the leading providers of affordable housing in east central Iowa is Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, otherwise known as a HACAP. HACAP provides reduced rents to individuals and families who cannot afford to pay normal rental rates.

Affordable housing is made possible through two distinct programs that are interconnected as a part of HACAP’s services. As a result of these efforts, families or individuals that might otherwise face homelessness can benefit from safe housing with rent discounted based on what the tenant can actually afford.

Transitional Housing

HACAP administers transitional housing properties in Benton County, Johnson County, Linn County and Washington County, see you can be sure that there is a participating property near you. These transitional housing units provide you and/or your family with a place to call your own while you work on your finances and your income.

HACAP will provide you with a case manager who will help you work towards becoming self-sufficient. In addition to counseling and classes, your case manager will work with you to help you increase income, improve your credit rating and save money so that you can eventually move into permanent housing.

Reduced Rent Permanent Housing

HACAP provides a Permanent Housing Program in Linn County which provides permanent leave reduced rent for lower-income families with children. Rent is based on a sliding scale based on what your family can afford.

Your case manager will also help you move into another rental property on the private market that is more convenient for you. One option is to help you meet the move-in requirements of a private landlord. Any available resources, including needs-based grants will be matched to your situation so that you can make the transition into permanent housing without the burden of borrowing money for rent deposits.

If you need reduced rent, then your case manager can help link you to reduce rent apartments and other subsidized housing that is available where you live. Remember that your case manager has list of all participating programs in this area so that you can get a head start.
