NEK-CAP rental and deposit assistance is available for NE Kansas tenants

Northeast Kansas Community Action Program (NEK-CAP) is the leading source of rental assistance to lower income tenants located in Atchison, Brown, Doniphan, Jackson, Jefferson, Marshall and Nemaha Counties.

NEK-CAP has provided community services to northeast Kansas since 1965. It is a publicly supported nonprofit organization, meaning that it receives federal and state grants as well as private donations to be used for the benefit of those who struggle to meet their monthly living costs. If your household is classified as lower income, then you could qualify for generous rental assistance. Tenants who have found themselves unable to cover rent costs may be able to get some financial help through the agency.

Tenant Based Rental Assistance

Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) is a program that provides cash to financially distressed tenants who might be at risk of eviction or homelessness. There are two approaches to the TBRA program.

  • Rental security deposit assistance. TBRA does not throw good money after bad. If your current rental is unaffordable, you could get help with funds towards a security deposit for a new rental home. Instead of a loan, TBRA may provide a grant that you would not have to repay.
  • Utility security deposit assistance. Even if you meet your new landlord’s move-in requirements, you still have to get utilities connected. TBRA can also assist with the deposits necessary to turn the utilities on in your new rental unit.

Housing with Opportunities

This supportive housing program serves potential tenants in Atchison, Brown and Marshall Counties who may have a history of evictions. The program teaches self-reliance and life skills that can help a tenant better meet the demands of living independently.

You will not be expected to live in a homeless shelter while attending classes. Instead, NEK-CAP can help you get established through transitional housing as you strengthen your budget, contribute to savings and work on credit or debt issues. you can even get help improving your income with the help of a case manager.

Housing Choice Vouchers

The Family Self-Sufficiency Program could provide your household with a 5-year promise of rental assistance as long as you are working towards your goals of independent self-sufficient living. Whether you are looking to start your own business or take classes that could help you land a better job, you could be in luck. These programs are available while you are receiving rental assistance that can subsidize your monthly rental costs.
