Williston rental assistance is dwarfed by rising rents

Increased housing demands in this northwest corner of North Dakota are causing some serious problems with Williams County’s ability to keep up with social services demands. Williston rental assistance programs were almost nonexistent prior to the oil boom that is caused homeless populations to swell. There are relief programs in place that provide help to those who need it as resources allow.

Williston Salvation Army

The traditional source of rental assistance in Williston was often through the Salvation Army. Applicants could receive up to $150 to put towards whatever funds they had on hand in order to make their rent payments.

Rents used to be as low as $400-$500 per month. Tenants are now being asked to pay well over $1000 for a very modest rental unit. While the assistance is still in place, it just doesn’t go as far as it used to. Still there are other ways that the Salvation Army can provide assistance such as help with utilities, food and even shower vouchers at the community center. For more help call 701-572-2921 or visit their office on Main Street.

Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota

One of the best weapons against rapidly rising rental rates is the development of affordable housing. Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota administers 16 apartments in a mix of one and two bedroom arrangements.

Rental rates are less than those charged by surrounding landlords. The agency also makes subsidies available to tenants who need a little bit more help in affording the monthly rent. The newly constructed Haven House provides housing for up to 12 individuals. The facility is located on 13th Ave., West in Williston. Reasonable rent is charged based on your ability to pay.
