Transitional housing in San Joaquin County

San Joaquin County is blessed to be served by several agencies and nonprofit organizations that provide transitional housing services. This extended stay benefit is a much safer and cleaner option than a homeless shelter, and the programs inspire confidence while giving residents the chance to save money towards a permanent residence.

Each of these programs serves a segment of the population. Transitional housing is often necessary for a family when they cannot afford rent payments over the course of a few months. This could be due to job loss, childbirth, injury or illness, or some other financial crisis that has caused them to be unable to pay rent. These programs provide free or nearly free rent for an extended time period.

Women’s Center Youth and Family Services

This charity provides emergency shelter for homeless youth and victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. Beyond their facilities (DAWN House, Serenity House, Safe House) that provide between 3 and 9 weeks of emergency shelter, a longer term transitional housing plan is in place.

Opportunity House can provide a transitional housing solution to emancipated minors and young adults through age 21. Residents benefit from the 21 months of support and living offered by Opportunity House. Case managers work with each resident to prepare them for a career and to save towards the move-in costs on a permanent home once they are ready to become independent.

Those interested in taking advantage may call 209-948-1911 to inquire about the Opportunity House transitional housing program.

McHenry House

The McHenry House Tracy Family Shelter provides immediate shelter to the homeless. Some of its residents receive cash support to make the transition back to permanent rental housing.

Instead of providing a separate residential facility outside of the homeless shelter, McHenry House chooses to provide cash aid to some residents to help them cover the security deposit and first few months of rent in a private rental property. This aid is actually provided for up to 6 months, making this a valuable tool for a family struggling to regain independence. Call 209-835-2328 for more information.

San Joaquin County Human Services Agency

The county also supports independence of young adults (and emancipated youth) through the Transitional Independent Living Program. While ongoing support is provided, each resident lives in an apartment. Call 209-468-1278 to find out eligibility requirements.

Dignity’s Alcove

Veterans who have so bravely defended this nation are eligible to receive up to 2 years of free rent through this transitional housing program. Dignity’s Alcove offers food and clean showers in addition to transitional housing.

Veterans may take advantage of the case management and training provided directly at the facility. For those Veterans who have struggled to live independently, this can be a very special opportunity to regain some of that independence. Call 209-465-4066 for more information about gaining access in this Stockton program.
