Is there transitional housing in Aiea, Hawaii?

(Request from Denise in Aiea, Hawaii) I am behind on my rent and my landlord wants us to move out before December 31st. I have a place for us to move into temporarily but we cannot get into there until Mid January. My landlord is asking if I will move before December 31st or they will file for formal eviction. What will buy me the most time? Otherwise between December 31st and mid January we will be living in our car. I have 2 small children, ages 6 and 2.

Dear Denise,

I am very sorry to hear about your difficult situation. It is indeed good news though that you have found a place to move into in the middle of January. We just have to find a safe place for your family to live in the meantime.

United Church of Christ Transition House

There is a faith-based transitional housing program operated by Church of the Crossroads United Church of Christ. The program is popular for victims of domestic violence by do not believe that it is a specific requirement to get help.

With this program you work with members of the church to improve your housing situation so that you can return to permanent housing as soon as you are able. This could be a safe option for your family while you are planning for a more permanent move. Call United Church of Christ Transition House at 808-949-2220.

Helping Hands Hawaii

The Good Neighbor Emergency Fund is also an option to consider. This source of funding for Helping Hands Hawaii helps the organization to provide emergency rental assistance to families just like yours who are facing eviction.

Normally the fund is used to cover late rent payments so families can remain in their current rental property. While this may be an option for your family, it is also possible that the organization may focus more on helping you transition from your current rental unit into a new property. It is up to your case manager to make this determination after meeting with you and discussing your needs with you. Call Helping Hands Hawaii at 808-440-3857.

Tenant-Based Rental Assistance

If you are a single mother then it may be even easier for your family to meet the income restrictions of the Tenant-Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) program. This is a program administered by the Honolulu Department of Community Services for the benefit of lower income families.

While the other programs focus primarily on transitional housing, TBRA is designed to help families make the final leap from temporary housing arrangements and into a permanent residence. There are five city partner agencies that provide case management to determine if you can be a recipient of TBRA funds.

You have several allies that are working hard to help you and your family find transitional housing in Aiea or Honolulu. One of these programs can provide your family safe passage over the next few weeks and help you find a permanent solution to your housing needs.
