SEVCA rental assistance makes a big difference in Windsor and Windham Counties

Tenants who are having troubles meeting rent can get help from programs of Southeastern Vermont Community Action, Inc (SEVCA).

This comprehensive community organization provides much needed assistance to lower income households who cannot afford their normal rent payments in the face of economic hardships. Families and individuals who might otherwise go homeless are able to get help with short and long-term rental needs so that they can live more comfortably.

Crisis Resolution

SEVCA operates a crisis resolution program that assists low income households with immediate needs. This can often be a necessary option for a family who may have just lost some of their assets as well as their independence due to an emergency.

The crisis resolution program can help your family with emergency shelter if you have no other place to stay. This can be a major help when you find yourself evicted from your home due to nonpayment of rent or other reasons. Often times, you may have either forgotten your supplies in the chaos or find that you are otherwise unable to access your belongings. Donations of food and clothing can also be obtained, making your emergency housing stay easier on your family.

Landlord Intervention

Are you threatened with eviction by your landlord? Are you behind on rent payments? SEVCA can negotiate a workout arrangement with your landlord to allow you to remain in the home, as long as this is a sustainable solution for you. SEVCA can provide you with case management to help you find money for rent, and work with your landlord to agree on a repayment schedule to bring rent payments up-to-date. In certain cases, your case manager may be able to help you receive a grant towards your rent so that you can get caught up sooner.

Permanent Rent Reduction

If your problems extend beyond a short-term hardship, then perhaps you may be a candidate for rent subsidies. SEVCA can help you determine whether you are eligible for permanently reduced rent which is based on a percentage of your income instead of what the market charges.

It is possible that you will qualify for housing choice vouchers under the federal Section 8 program. Additionally, there are reduced rent apartments available through the Community Land Trust.
