Assistance paying my rent is necessary in Monterey

(Request from Sharon in Monterey, California) I have a permanent disability, autoimmune disease requiring 4 infusions a year, prednisone, etc…..  I just hired a lawyer for a hearing for SSD (I made the mistake of trying to do it myself).  I have been going downhill the last year or so…Physically and mentally.  I was a contract laborer working from home.  Due to my inability to concentrate, remember directives, etc….I was just let go from the job.  My Doctor’s letter states I cannot work,  BUT I HAVE BILLS TO PAY !!!  Assistance paying my rent is necessary..  $950.00 per month.  Thank you kindly..Sharon

Dear Sharon,

It appears that you have a condition that you believe qualifies you for social security disability benefits. This means that you will be considered totally and permanently disabled by your condition, which precludes you from doing any full time job.

What it means is that rather than focusing on emergency aid programs like HRC, you will need to find a permanent solution to your situation. A permanent solution may include subsidies or affordable housing.

Housing Authority of the County of Monterey (HACM)

HACM does more than just provide rental assistance. It invests in permanently affordable housing, which is what you will need. Due to the demand for these below market rate rental units, there is a waiting list in order to be considered. The waiting list is so long that HACM only opens it up to new applications periodically as the backlog gets cleared out some. This could mean years before your application for affordable housing is considered.

While the waiting list is based on the federal Section 8 program, there are other methods for getting help. The agency understands that nobody can afford to wait years for an immediate need.

Transitional housing opportunities are available to households who find themselves at risk of homelessness. The purpose of transitional housing is to help stabilize your situation so that you are not homeless. Then you can be connected with programs that can provide additional opportunities to find long term, permanently affordable housing.

Pueblo Del Mar includes 56 houses which are reserved for this temporary purpose. Call 831-582-9461 to find out more about requirements and vacancies.

Permanent Affordable Housing

A reduction in your rent may be possible if you are able to gain access to one of the reduced rent properties administered by HACM.

  • Casanova Plaza contains 169 units. This public housing project near Fremont and Canyon Del Rey Blvd looks more like a well-maintained apartment building. A property manager can answer questions about access requirements. Call 831-375-0373.
  • Portola Vista has 64 single bedroom units. It is situated just a couple of blocks back from the bay. This property also mirrors your typical residential apartment complex, with attention to cleanliness and proper appearance. Call 831-372-5057 to speak with a property manager.

There are a few other properties in Monterey County if you are willing to relocate to one of the other communities. For more information on these other communities, you may call the Housing Authority of the County of Monterey at 831-775-5000.
