Need rental assistance in Hendricks County

Residents of Hendricks County, Indiana may obtain assistance when they are unable to pay rent and security deposit. There are several options for aid, and each option depends on the actual circumstances of the tenant. We received a request for aid from a client in Avon.

(Request received from Nicky in Avon, Indiana) I am in Hendricks County and currently living in Avon. I am trying to find a way to apply for housing vouchers or housing/rental assistance program to assist me with cost of rent/living until I can adjust and generate more income to be able to afford normal cost and housing. I need to move within the next month and I am very limited on money. I am in a very toxic and unhealthy environment now because of going through a seperation and not being able to get out and into my own place because of me being a student, very little to no income and where I currently live is our home which is in his name and he is the primary provider. However I have to leave and end this relationship for the sake of my son and him being in a happy and healthy home. Please let me know who is best to call and if you have contact information or resources. Thank you

Dear Nicky,

Living in a toxic relationship is hard enough for an adult. It can be even tougher for children. I know that you will make the best decision for you and your family as you seek out a change to your current situation.

The housing vouchers that you are referring to are available through the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. The primary problem that you would encounter with this program is that the waiting list is so lengthy that it would not meet your immediate needs. Waiting lists normally stretch longer than two years. Even vacancies at public housing projects can be tough to claim.

Community Action of Greater Indianapolis administers the Section 8 vouchers for Hendricks County. You may ask about the waiting list and whether they are still adding new applicants. It may also be advisable to request information about the Community Economic Relief Fund (CERF), since that might be a better match to your needs.

There was a push to provide rental assistance to those who went to the area food banks. The Hendricks County Food Pantry Coalition Fund was intended to pay for rent aid to clients identified by food bank staff and volunteers who needed the help. You can contact the Hendricks County Community Foundation to see if any rental aid is still available at one of the 21 food banks that they support. Their contact number is 317-268-6240.

Since you live in Avon, you may have a special opportunity to benefit from an arrangement between the Washington Township Trustee and the United Way of Central Indiana. General relief and rent payment assistance are two services available only to Washington Township residents. You can find out about these programs by calling 317-272-1835.

Finally, if you feel that your relationship has been abusive, it could facilitate certain funds to be used in your care. Make sure that you inform any case manager that you are working with of any history of family violence. More aid may be available by calling United Way also by dialing 211.
