I need a grant or loan for rent in the Bronx

(Request from Thomas in the Bronx, New York) Due to illness my finances are depleted. I need a one time loan/grant in order to rent a new space. I currently am homeless. however I am beginning a new job this week. Who are some agencies that can answer my questions? Thanks.

Dear Thomas,

I would like to sincerely congratulate you on your new job. This is a very exciting step for you as it will allow you to flexibility and freedom to be able to live independently. As you make this transition from homelessness, there are some programs that can help you transition into safe and affordable housing.

NYC Department of Youth & Community Development

One housing program that serves well over 4000 families each year is the Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD). This city agency serves as the community action program for the Bronx.

You may find that you will likely meet most or all of the eligibility requirements in order to receive rental assistance through the DYCD. You will want to make sure that your case manager is aware of your current homelessness, the hardship that you endured as a result of illness, your lack of income during previous months and most importantly, the fact that you are starting a new job this week.

The city administers affordable housing projects that are restricted to those whose incomes are below 125% of the federal poverty level. Units range from studios up to three bedroom apartments:

  • Creston Avenue
  • Longwood Section
  • Melrose Section
  • Mott Haven
  • Westchester Square Section

Some of these units may include heat and hot water and have rent prices starting at well under $1000 per month. You may call the NYC Hotline at 311 in order to find out more information about these affordable housing communities and the New Housing Marketplace Plan.

BronxWorks

BronxWorks may be able to provide you with assistance. The organization’s primary focus is on eviction prevention, which often includes emergency grants to cure rent delinquencies. However you will find that the organization also has a robust Homeless Services program.

The Homeless Services program can provide you with emergency housing to get you off the street. The Living Room is an emergency shelter program. They administer three family residences in the Bronx, which could provide you with transitional housing while you build up your savings. A more permanent residence is also available at The Brook.

In order to be considered for one of BronxWorks’ rental assistance programs, call the Single Stop hotline at 718-731-3114.

Department of Homeless Services

The city’s Department of Homeless Services could also be a potential ally in your search for a grant or loan for rent in the Bronx. This agency works tirelessly to provide alternatives to homeless shelters.

Some of the agency’s clients have been able to receive thousands of dollars in public subsidies to help them make their late rent payments. Other clients have been able to receive help with the move-in requirements, including first month’s rent and security deposit.

You may find that these organizations work closely together and often refer clients between the organizations. The easiest way to get started is to call 311 to request information on loans or grants in the Bronx that can be used for rent. Be sure to ask about affordable housing opportunities as well.
