Money is short and need help with security deposit in Manville RI

Too often a family has rent money but has trouble with the extra needed for the security deposit. This Rhode Island family is no different.

(Request from Marci in Manville, Rhode Island) My family and I got accepted to be tenants, money is short and we are homeless and we need help getting into this home. We need help with the security deposit please.

Dear Marci,

I understand that you cannot meet the security deposit requirement for a house that meets your needs. There are some possible options to give you the necessary funds to make sure that you can occupy the home. Each provider has certain criteria that must be met, which will largely depend on your income and family size.

I have personally referred other clients to BVCAP for similar situations where they needed actual cash to put down towards a rental deposit. This nonprofit agency provides the service to lower income families across the Greater Providence area. This agency can help give you the funds you need, but only if you meet the eligibility requirements.

Crossroads Rhode Island is another potential option. This charity is located on Broad Street. Crossroads received a sizable grant from the General Assembly in 2014 to use for situations like yours. I cannot say that they would necessarily provide you with a rent deposit, but I can assure you that they can meet with you and discuss an action plan that might include either financial support or some other suitable option.

I realize that security deposits can be sizable. While working in Providence in 2012, I noticed that many of my clients were having to cover two full months with a security deposit, while landlords in other states generally only require a single month’s rent as a deposit. It can make moving in even more difficult.

I recommend checking with both organizations to see what can be done to help you get moved into suitable housing. It is quite possible that you could move into the home that you found, and they may be able to match your needs with available funding to make it happen. Please feel free to comment below if you have any successes or problems with curing your homelessness. We want to make sure your family is taken care of right away!
