Late and need help with rent in Rancho Cucamonga

Rancho Cucamonga tenants who are falling behind on rent may some time before an eviction occurs, but eventually a landlord may force them out for failure to make rent payments. There are options that may be able to provide relief from late rent.

(Request from Juanita in Rancho Cucamonga, California) In need of rental assistance…work hours got cut and behind in up coming rent. I really need help don’t want to get evicted. I’m a single parent trying to keep it together.

Dear Juanita,

Your challenge of providing for your family as a single parent are already tough enough. Now that your work hours have been cut, it will be important to find a new source of income to cover your monthly living costs. There are some intermediate measures that could allow you some flexibility while you try to restore your income to previous levels.

Inland Valley Hope Partners

This faith-based charity provides emergency housing services to lower income households of Rancho Cucamonga and other surrounding areas within San Bernardino County. Stabilization of the family situation is a major priority, and emergency rental assistance could be provided to cover from 30-90 days of support.

Cash grants of up to 3 months are not necessarily the approach that an applicant should expect. Instead, the organization utilizes motel vouchers and some emergency rental aid to help a family avoid homelessness. Applicants should expect to meet with a case manager and to provide documentation of their income and expenses as well as family situation.

For more information about the emergency housing program or “Our House” residential family shelter, call Inland Valley Hope Partners at 909-622-3806.

Catholic Charities

Another faith-based option is Catholic Charities San Bernardino & Riverside Counties. The goal of this organization is to provide emergency rental assistance when individuals and families are unable to receive help through county aid agencies. This has been more common, especially since the Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino has kept their waiting list closed since 2007 for housing choice vouchers. There simply is not enough government money going around, which has caused more people to seek services through Catholic Charities and other local charity organizations.

To see if Catholic Charities can help, call their main San Bernardino office at 909-388-1239. Their Ontario office is probably closer to you. Call 909-391-4882 for local support.

CAP of San Bernardino County

The local community action partnership affiliate can be a big help for dealing with financial distress, especially when missed rent may increase the risk of homelessness. Many tenants turn to CAP of San Bernardino County due to the depth of programs offered by the organization. We previously featured CAP’s emergency rent program as well as transitional housing options through the agency. I strongly recommend that you take a look at this possibility since it may offer the most comprehensive approach to helping you deal with a rental arrearage situation.

Each organization has funding limits and qualification guidelines. It is important to meet with a case manager even if there is a possibility that qualifications may not be met. Many applicants are often referred to additional resources that case managers are aware of in the local community. Since these resources (and the funding) can change from month to month, caseworkers are the best resource for getting matched with emergency rent funds and programs.
