I’m 19 and need help paying my security deposit in Raleigh

(Request from Lakeyia in Raleigh, North Carolina) My name is Lakeyia. I’m 19 and I have a one year old son. I need help paying  my security deposit. Please help me get help. I really need this help.

Dear Lakeyia,

Trying to live on your own can be difficult, especially with a small child. I understand that you need help with your security deposit to move into a new place. What I do not know is if you are currently working.

We have previously assisted other Raleigh residents who were seeking security deposits for a move. You may find some of the information relevant to your own situation.

I have personally worked with some of the support programs located within Raleigh that help young women like yourself with gaining access to safe and affordable housing. I can point you in the direction of a couple programs that I believe could help you out.

Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network

One successful program located near NC State University is Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network. This faith-based program combines transitional housing with financial skills training and other programs to help meet many needs faced by young families, especially those with small children.

I have many times facilitated the credit skills portion of the Ready to Rent program that is hosted at their Method Road facility. This workshop helps you understand why landlords require good credit and what you can do to establish, build and protect your credit rating. Your credit is one major portion of the tenant application. Of course, the security deposit is the other guarantee that protects the landlord.

Wake County Human Services

I really think that you should make contact with Wake County Human Services. This county government office can help you determine the best way to take care of your needs for affordable housing. Wake County Human Services is the administrator of the Ready to Rent program.

There are three major ways the the agency can help you. First, you can be screened for possible benefits. This could help you obtain any aid for which you qualify for. Second, you can work with a case manager to determine your family’s needs and get matched with available programs. Finally, the agency is a gateway to several transitional housing programs that can help you bypass the regular high security deposit requirements of private landlords.

I recommend contacting Wake County Human Services and requesting an appointment to meet with a member of the Supportive Housing Program. Call 919-212-9379.

Loan Options

You may be approached by lenders that claim they can help you out. I strongly recommend against a loan unless you have a steady source of income. A better option would be a grant-based approach or transitional housing program.
