Help with security deposit on apartment in Newton County, GA

Actual rental assistance in Newton County, Georgia is thin in comparison to other communities. Still some funding is provided for public benefit to curb homelessness.

(Request from Abner in Covington, Georgia) Hello my name is Abner Knox and I need assistance with deposit on a apartment. I just got a job and I have a 15 month ago daughter and were homeless at this time. I really need some assistance to move into the apartment please. I don’t have family here in Georgia and no where to go. I tried to go to a homeless shelter and they won’t accept me because of my daughter.

Dear Abner,

Traditional rental assistance organizations are present in Newton County, but their priorities are not the same as in other locales. This means that their funding is focused primarily on other forms of social aid. This will make it more difficult for you to find assistance to move into the apartment. Here are a couple of local agencies that provide aid.

Community Action Partnership

The Partnership for Community Action is the local affiliate for the national CAP association. Instead of rental assistance though, this organization focuses primarily on utility bill assistance and Head Start preschool programs. They simply lack the funding to expand into this need.

United Way

The Covington-Newton County United Way chapter does provide community outreach by funding local organizations that assist the poor. It is possible that they may be able to link you directly with one of their aid organizations to find out what is possible to help you move into an apartment.

I cannot find that the local chapter is yet tied into the national 211 service, so you may need to call their local number at 770-786-7638.

I strongly recommend contacting the local United Way location. They can assist you with a proper referral into a program that can help you make a transition into more permanent housing.

At a minimum, they can help you find emergency housing that will admit you and your daughter. Some men’s shelters purposefully exclude children for their safety. It just means that you will need to instead seek admission into an emergency housing program where men and children are admitted. The United Way can help you with this process.

I realize that this can be frustrating for you. However, the worst of it is over now that you have a job. United Way can help you with the rest to find a permanent living solution.
