Crisis Intervention Services of Keokuk, Lucas, Mahaska & Marion counties

One organization that provides immediate relief to abuse victims is Crisis Intervention Services (CIS). This community agency serves those who are plunged into crisis by sexual assault or domestic violence. To enhance their transition to stability, Crisis Intervention Services provides emergency financial assistance and a transitional housing program.

The programs in place at CIS provide immediate aid to those who are suddenly without housing. Some were forced to leave in the middle of the night. Other clients sought help after leaving an abusive relationship. Even police may refer some clients to the organization.

It is hard enough for a single adult to deal with the traumatic events that can lead to homelessness. CIS know that it is even harder when children are involved. That is why the programs offered by the organization are geared to provide relief in these situations.

Emergency Shelter

When someone is suddenly homeless, CIS provides emergency shelter. This can be provided literally within hours of an emergency. Each client is provided with case management so that an evaluation of the situation can result in an action plan for change.

Emergency shelter could be for just a night, or it could last for six weeks or longer. Men are housed separately from women and children.

Transitional Housing

The transitional housing program is the major tool used to break the cycle of reliance on abusers. Perhaps someone was a homemaker for several years while raising children. They may not have the skills or confidence to immediately jump into the workforce. CIS can help them develop those skills.

The advantage of transitional housing at CIS is that residents are able to save more of their income towards a future permanent housing solution. By saving money, it is possible to produce a security deposit and first month’s rent when the opportunity does arise to move to a new home. CIS provides the housing needed during the interim so that a transition to permanent housing is easiest.

Financial Assistance

Grants can sometimes be provided to clients when they need emergency aid. Case managers are familiar with the charities that provide local cash aid, and referrals are made when a situation warrants this type of assistance.

A major focus is on the actual budget of the household, since grants are only a temporary solution. The goal of the agency is to help victims recover from their situation so that they are able to live independently of those who chose to abuse them.
