Choctaw Nation Housing Authority provides rental assistance to Native Americans

Native Americans living in the Choctaw Nation service area have access to rental assistance funds to help when hardship hits.

While an emergency shelter is available if you have already been evicted with no place to go, there are rental assistance dollars available to help you remain in your current rental home if it is possible. That way your family can remain as stable as possible while you work to fix the issues that have caused you to have trouble making rent. These are the programs available in the Choctaw Nation:

  • Rental Assistance Program. Low income Native American families may receive cash towards their rent. Choctaw Tribal Members will receive funding before other requests are granted. Call 580-326-7521 to request an application.
  • Mutual Help Development Program. This sweat equity program can allow you to bypass rents altogether as you work alongside other program participants to build your own home. You must have a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) to qualify, and Tribal Members will be a higher priority over non-members. Call 580-326-7521, extension 271.
  • Modular Housing Program. This program can provide your family with a home of your own. Their Home Finance Department can provide the loan. Call 918-967-4332 in Stigler or 580-927-1074 in Coalgate.
  • Affordable Rental Housing. The Choctaw Nation maintains reduced rent communities for those who cannot afford normal market rents. Contact the local community to inquire about vacancies (Caney 580-326-1432; Bokoshe, Quinton, Red Oak 580-372-4091; Talihina 580-372-4664; Wright City 580-372-4284.
  • Supportive Housing for the Elderly. Tenants aged 62 and up may gain access to available 1-bedroom apartments at affordable rates. Call each community directly for vacancy information (Durant 580-326-1432; Hugo 580-372-4284; Idabel 580-208-0024; Poteau 580-326-1749).
  • Home Finance. Several programs exist to help you replace your rent with a low rate mortgage on a home you owe. These include the Choctaw Homebuyers Advantage Program, Revolving Loan Fund, Down Payment/Closing Cost Assistance Program and Section 184 Program. Call 580-326-7521 to find out the details.

As you can see, there is a vast amount of support available in the Choctaw Nation to help your family become self-sufficient and to begin building wealth through homeownership. Take the initiative and call today to begin.
