Ask if utility payment assistance is also available

You may have sought out a local rental assistance program, but did you consider that the agency you contacted may have additional programs that can help? Tenants struggling with rent payments usually have difficulty with utility payments also. It only makes sense to try and help both problems.

You may be familiar with programs that can help you with rent in a number of ways (back rent, security deposit, subsidized housing, etc.). Many of these agencies also receive funding to be used for helping with utilities.

Qualifications are usually very similar to the eligibility requirements for rental help. Your family generally must be classified as lower income. Special consideration is often given to the elderly, disabled families with small children and veterans. If you have received a disconnect warning, this can help expedite funding.

Aid can come in the form of cash payments. Usually though it is applied directly to your utility bill (water or electricity) as energy credits. These credits can pay off all or a portion of your outstanding balance with the utility company. This energy assistance comes as a grant, so you do not have to repay it. Some agencies provide the help as a one time opportunity. Others will give it to you once a year or more depending on availability.

Security deposits may also be available. This can help reduce your upfront costs when you move into a new place. Usually this is a loan, so the deposit would be returned to the agency at the end of your occupancy.

Funding for these programs come from a variety of sources. Utility companies dedicate a certain amount of funding for charitable purposes to help those who cannot afford to heat and cool their home. Local governments usually have supplemental programs in place to cover some utility payments. Many charities also provide funding, including various dioceses of Catholic Charities, the Salvation Army and partner agencies of the United Way.

To apply, you will have to show proof that you live in that local community. Your case manager can help you with the application, or they can direct you to the proper agency that has funding to help you with your utility bills.

Maybe you experienced a financial emergency that has you extremely short on cash. Worry not. With help for both your rent payments and your utility bills, you can get the assistance you need to get back on track with your life.
